“Last Viscom Class!!”

Saturday, December 15, 2012

These two pages are compilations of my work for the VisCom1 Class. This was definitely one of the BEST art classes I’ve EVER had!! Every week Peter Han (our teacher) gave us lectures about the subject which really helped when we actually started drawing at the museums. I learned thinking more in a “design” way while drawing. I learned about focus points. We received personal feedback on our work and progress every week. And every now and then our teacher would be giving a demo, which is very helpful if you are trying to learn a certain technique.    Also this is a great drawing technique to use in future projects. Overall, I’m very happy I took this class!!!

“The last Character Design class!!”

Saturday, December 15, 2012

So here they are! The final character designs for the book “The little prince” By Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I really love the book, so designing those characters was a lot of fun.

This was our last class for Character Design. And we had to do a little presentation about our characters and show our design process and tell a bit about how we did it.

Remember the first assignment we had to do when this class started? We had to design characters out of fruit and vegetables and maintain their silhouette shapes. Doing that small project really helped me doing these final character designs.

I’m happy I finished the sculptures! Although this was not an assignment for the class…I really loved doing it. And I’m kinda into sculpting action figures (bjd’s) right now….But that’s actually a secret! Sssst..

“The last VisDev class….:<”

Monday, December 10, 2012

Yessss! I finished the Sungod painting. A week ago I made the first version which I wasn’t really happy about…I took it to class and got some feedback. So this last week I worked on the feedback. Changed the composition, worked on the focal point and flow in the painting. I’m not perfectly happy still.. But it is kinda ok to look at. And I can accept some small things that could be better. But it was worse before..believe me. Ok.

I have two weeks left before I’m back in Holland. Hopefully I have time to make The Giant Hippo painting…xD Would be really fun.

This is kinda random..but I hope it’s still snowing when I’m back in Holland. :3 I love snow! Here in LA the sun is shining and it’s 20 degrees…not bad too!

“Character Expressions”

Saturday, December 8, 2012

This is always tons of fun. Hope to finish more of these sheets for the other characters soon. Next class will be the last one!! BoohoO!! So this week I have a loo0o0o0ot of work to finish!! Especially if you want to have something good…Imma do my best! xD

“Character Sculptures”

Saturday, December 1st, 2012

decided to make my characters in clay. This was not an assignment for the class, I just did this because I thought it would help me further in the process of designing the characters. It’s kinda interesting how you start thinking about the shapes when you sculpt your characters. I changed how the hair of the little prince looked and with designing the fox I came up with a lot of new shapes for her ears and tail etc.

The good thing about clay is that you can experiment with shapes right away. It’s kinda hard to do though! It’s not an easy method and it takes some time. But it was definitely worth the effort. It took me out of the box, which is good.. especially when you are working on something for a long time.

I’m not done with painting them yet. So the colors on the picture are not final. I will finish coloring them this week.

The next step will be working on the final designs for the characters. Can’t wait !! It’s a lot of fun to do! :>

Day 50. “Britney Lee Exposition”

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Super awesome work of Brittney Lee!! She started with an internship at Disney as a digital artist. And for one of her latest projects she wanted to do something different. Something that would want them to let her stay and work there. So for that latest project she choose to make all the Visual Development artwork with paper. Just like she loved to do when she was young. She wasn’t sure if they would like it….but! it was much appreciated! (of course :3 ) They loved her style and since that day she is working as a real Vis Dev Artist. Reaaaally cool XD!! Doing what she loves. This inspires me!

If you are in LA you should check it out. Her art is shown in Nucleus gallery (in Alhambra) and it’s free. ^^

Day 48. “The CTN Animation Expo”

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

The CTN expo was a great experience! A place where artists can meet, share art and inspire each other. I was totally amazed… art was everywhere!! Imagine a place with hundreds of artists…It’s crazy!!

A lot of artists from the animation industry had a booth. You could talk to them, see their art and even ask for an portfolio review. There also were a lot of  lectures and nice workshops. Unfortunately, Jor and me where a bit too late for that so we decided to look around and get my portfolio reviewed.

I met my teachers Mike Yamada, Patrick Awa and Peter Han. It was great to see their personal work and I bought some prints as souvenir for when I’m back in Holland. They signed it for me. :) I also saw Britney Lee and got a print. I really love her work.

Day 49. “Color Script Pinocchio  - Week 7”

Monday, November 19th, 2012

This is my color script for my redesign on the Pinoccio movie. The idea is that orange (warm color) represents the good. For example, the god that brings Pinocchio to life is the Sun God and she is mostly made of orange and yellow colors. Blue and purple ( cold colors ) represents evil. So you see those colors, for example,  in the scene where Pinocchio gets taken away by the Fox and the cat.
You can see how the first 3 scenes are starting with warm colors. After scene 3, Pinocchio gets in trouble and the colors change to blue/purple/grey. In the end, where Pinocchio comes back to life and everything is good again, the warm colors are back again.

Day 47. “Some little sketches for The Prince  - Week 7”

Saturday, November 17th, 2012

These are the first sketches for The Little Prince and The Narrator. I wanted The Little Prince to have very soft and round shapes so he looks like an open and spiritual/dynamic character. The Narrator also has some of those round shapes in his silhouette because he is somewhat similar to the prince, but not totally. He has his long legs, that break out of the roundness. I could also make The Narrator a very big friendly guy, but that won’t really work because it would be too similar to the prince silhouette.

They both have different personalities so they need to be different in their silhouette. But I kinda tried to give them some similar shapes because they share some characteristics. I don’t want them to be totally different. I also tried to choose the colors based on their personalities, but I still need to work more on it these upcoming weeks.

Day 42. “Work in progress - Week 5”

Monday, November 12th, 2012

Last class we learned a lot about color and how to apply it to a painting. We had to do a couple of color sketches and one final painting. I learned about monochromatic color scheme, complementairy color scheme, analogus and analogous with accent color scheme’s. For this painting I did a double complementairy scheme. Orange/Blue and Green/Purple.

This painting is not done yet!..I’ve received feedback from the teachers in class and I’m going to finish it this week. Some color and light corrections and maybe a little bit extra rendering to finish it up. Hope you like it already!

Day 40. “Viscom Homework - Week 5”

Saturday, November 10th, 2012

Day 34. “Viscom Homework - Week 4”

Saturday, November 4th, 2012

So this week we needed to focus on “insects”. Which is really cool because I don’t draw insects that often. But they look so interesting, almost like little machines. The teacher took a lot of beautiful insects to class like butterflies, scorpions, beetles and much more. He also took a Tarantula with him (yes, a living one!)..and it was actually very beautiful! Didn’t expect that at all! :)

Also the little comic is my re-design project. Every week we need to do a re-design on the topic we are focusing on that week. You can make anything: a character, building, environment or anything that has to do with the subject. I wanted to do something that has a story, so I came up with this idea for a comic about a little girl.

My idea: Sara, the explorer! She goes on an adventure in the jungle in search of insects. But when she explore those insects, they all look very different and almost fantasy-like ;) (She sees the world in her own childish way) For example the butterfly has this face that can show expressions. And maybe a beetle is mechanical from the inside when Sara looks at it. I hope I can make a finished piece of this idea later, so it’s more presentable. But if you have an idea of a insect that looks like something? Let me know. Maybe I’ll add it to the comic eventually ;)
